Friday Update

We have had a busy week with lots of things that were out or our normal routine. We started the week with recording Psalm 23, and the students did such a great job. I think you will be so pleased when you watch Remembrance Day Assembly. On Tuesday we had a lockdown drill. It was the first of these drills this year, so we walked through what to do and where to go. I was pleased with how well they listened. On Wednesday, we had Fall Color day and hot dog lunch … for which they were all SO SO excited. Thursday we did a fun experiment … ask them about it, we may have made a bit of a mess. And Friday, we ended the week watching Charlotte’s Web, because we finished the book last week. So lots going on, and lots of fun! Now, it is hard to believe that we are in November. I have several who have bumped up a level or two and I am so pleased to see many of them working hard at this. Keep up the good work 🙂

Friday Update

Well, another week down. Another short week with lots packed into it. I have been so impressed with my Grade 2’s and the way they have tackled new concepts and skills. With only a couple of weeks practice, they have really worked hard at adding with regrouping in Math, and for the most part, we all understand it. Great job! We had a fire drill this week. Always good to practice and make sure we know what to do. As a Read Aloud, we have been reading Charlotte’s Web. We finished that today, and are looking forward to watching the movie as a class next week (if anyone has concerns about this, let me know). I hope you all enjoy a great long weekend!

This is our last week to practice Psalm 23 – we will be recording sometime at the end of this week.

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me.You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

  • On Oct. 28, one of our fabulous local business’, Fraser Valley Roofing, has graciously agreed to sponsor a Hot Dog Day for our students. At lunch time, the food truck will be here to hand out hot dogs to our entire school! Each child will receive one hot dog and 1 bag of chips free of charge. Students do not need to sign up or send anything to receive the hot dog or chips. If students do not wish to have get a hot dog, they should bring their regular lunch and let their teacher know that they will not be having a hot dog on the day of the event. This should be a fun day as it is also Fall Colour Dress-up Day for our students!

Friday Update

Good afternoon! We have had a full week in Grade 2 this week. We did an earthquake drill, started learning how to add with regrouping, had our first chapel with the Grade 1’s and the Grade 1/2’s. It was so fun to be able to be in the chapel and worshipping with other kids. We also been enjoying books in the series ‘If You Give a …’ and this week read about ‘If You Give a Pig a Party’. Lots of hard work, and awesome learning happening around here.

And then we have our verse for the week of October 19th (which lines up with our chapel topic).

Mark 10:13-14

People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

Friday Update

It was a great week in Grade 2. We had our first ‘assembly’, which does look a little different this year (we just do it in class), where we talked about Healthy Relationships. We read the story ‘Bucket Filler’ and talked about what it means/how we can be, bucket fillers. We started working on double digit addition, and continued to review single digit subtraction. Many of them are finding this quite simple, which is good because we are about to get into some concepts that are a little bit trickier!. Well, I hope that you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. Enjoy the extra day off and some time with family. (PS – ask your child what they said they would do if they were a turkey trying to avoid Thanksgiving dinner.)

Dates to Remember:

Monday, October 12th – Thanksgiving, no school

Thursday, October 15th – Picture Retakes (for those needing them)

Friday, October 16th – Knight Day

Health Check Reminder

Hey! Just want to send out this reminder for what the protocols are for sending your child to school each day, and what I am asking them each morning. That being said, if you feel circumstances outside of these parameters mean you need to keep them home, that is your decision. Any questions, let me know! Click on the image to make it bigger and more clear.

Friday Update

What a wet, but good, week we have had! We have been doing lots of review over the last couple of weeks, and are just starting to begin new units in different subjects. I have been reading individually with each of the students, and am excited that we were able to get our Home Reading program started this week. We did our Terry Fox Run on Thursday during our gym class. We had to do it in the gym because of all the rain, but it was great to see the kids try their best the whole time. And a big thanks to all who supported the cause by sending in a toonie. I hope you all have a restful long weekend.

Reminders and Other Information:

  • Remember to complete your child’s health check every day
  • Planners go home and come back to school every day (we will write spelling words in them at the beginning of the week, please don’t do it at home with your child)
  • Don’t forget to bring a water bottle every day – no water fountains available
  • Send your child dressed for the weather! I can’t stress this enough – if it is raining they will be outside unless it is torrential downpour – please make sure they have jackets at least … rain boots and umbrellas are also not a bad idea.
  • Orange Shirt Day – children may wear orange shirts and casual bottoms – we will talk about why this day is significant in an age-level appropriate way
  • Home Reading – make sure you are reading with your child every night – return their book baggie when you have completed 5 days of reading
  • Friday Letters – I am excited for this activity that we will do each week – students went home today with a letter they have written for you, and we want you to write them back! This is a great way for them to practice a lot of the skills we are working on (printing, sentence writing, etc). The duotangs will go home every Friday, and need to be sent back with your child on Monday. There is a newsletter explaining this further in your child’s planner today. They are always very excited to read the letter from their moms and dads, so please try to make it a priority to respond to the letter that they write.

Home Reading

Today I am sending students with their Home Reading. This is a program that I run because it is so important for them to be reading EVERY night at home. They will come home with a book that is at their reading level.

They are to read the same book once a day for 5 days. Once they have read it, and filled out the provided form, 5 times, they will bring it back to read with me. When the entire form is filled out they can bring it in for a prize.

I will be check for fluency, as well as comprehension. Sometimes, you might think it is an easy read for your child, and that may be the case. BUT, if they do not have the comprehension to go along with the reading, then we are not reading for understanding and we are not ready to move on.

Inside the baggie with the book, is the form to fill out, as well as written instructions.

If your child attends Learning Assistance, they will not receive a baggie for Home Reading from me, they will get one from Mrs. Wilson (once she has all the permission slips).

Let me know if you have any questions.
