Health Check Reminder

Hey! Just want to send out this reminder for what the protocols are for sending your child to school each day, and what I am asking them each morning. That being said, if you feel circumstances outside of these parameters mean you need to keep them home, that is your decision. Any questions, let me know! Click on the image to make it bigger and more clear.

Friday Update

What a wet, but good, week we have had! We have been doing lots of review over the last couple of weeks, and are just starting to begin new units in different subjects. I have been reading individually with each of the students, and am excited that we were able to get our Home Reading program started this week. We did our Terry Fox Run on Thursday during our gym class. We had to do it in the gym because of all the rain, but it was great to see the kids try their best the whole time. And a big thanks to all who supported the cause by sending in a toonie. I hope you all have a restful long weekend.

Dates to Remember/October Dates:

Monday, September 28th – Pro-D Day, no school

Wednesday, September 30th – Orange Shirt Day

Friday, October 2nd – Knight Day

Tuesday, October 6th – Healthy Relationships

Friday, October 9th – Knight Day

Monday, October 12th – Thanksgiving, no school

Friday, October 16th – Knight Day

Friday, October 23rd – Pro-D Day

Wednesday, October 28th – Fall Colours Day

Spelling:

No spelling list this week due to the short week.

Reminders and Other Information:

  • Remember to complete your child’s health check every day
  • Planners go home and come back to school every day (we will write spelling words in them at the beginning of the week, please don’t do it at home with your child)
  • Don’t forget to bring a water bottle every day – no water fountains available
  • Send your child dressed for the weather! I can’t stress this enough – if it is raining they will be outside unless it is torrential downpour – please make sure they have jackets at least … rain boots and umbrellas are also not a bad idea.
  • Orange Shirt Day – children may wear orange shirts and casual bottoms – we will talk about why this day is significant in an age-level appropriate way
  • Home Reading – make sure you are reading with your child every night – return their book baggie when you have completed 5 days of reading
  • Friday Letters – I am excited for this activity that we will do each week – students went home today with a letter they have written for you, and we want you to write them back! This is a great way for them to practice a lot of the skills we are working on (printing, sentence writing, etc). The duotangs will go home every Friday, and need to be sent back with your child on Monday. There is a newsletter explaining this further in your child’s planner today. They are always very excited to read the letter from their moms and dads, so please try to make it a priority to respond to the letter that they write.

Home Reading

Today I am sending students with their Home Reading. This is a program that I run because it is so important for them to be reading EVERY night at home. They will come home with a book that is at their reading level.

They are to read the same book once a day for 5 days. Once they have read it, and filled out the provided form, 5 times, they will bring it back to read with me. When the entire form is filled out they can bring it in for a prize.

I will be check for fluency, as well as comprehension. Sometimes, you might think it is an easy read for your child, and that may be the case. BUT, if they do not have the comprehension to go along with the reading, then we are not reading for understanding and we are not ready to move on.

Inside the baggie with the book, is the form to fill out, as well as written instructions.

If your child attends Learning Assistance, they will not receive a baggie for Home Reading from me, they will get one from Mrs. Wilson (once she has all the permission slips).

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Toonies for Terry – Each year, we celebrate the amazing achievements and life of Terry Fox and collect money to raise awareness for cancer research. We will be participating in our Terry Fox Run on September 24th and we would ask that each student bring in a toonie to help with this cause. Thanks for partnering with us in this! The toonie can be brought in any day this week.
  • With rain in the forecast, please send your student to school with a rain coat and boots if they like puddles! We will be getting outside as much as possible for recess and lunch (even if it’s raining a little), as well as meeting you outside even in the rain so we need to be prepared!

Planners went home with students today. They are expected to bring their planners each day; we use it to communicate between home and school. It will have information about the week ahead, as well as we will be writing our spelling words in them. Feel free to notify me of anything that is important for me to know here. Please sign and return planners to school daily. Thanks!

Friday Update

Thanks everyone for a great first week! We have all been learning a lot of new routines and protocols, washing our hands a lot, and getting to know each other. It has been a long time (almost 6 months!!) since we’ve been in regular class and it has been a pleasure to be able to be face to face with your children. I hope that you all are excited about the year ahead and about all that is to come. I know that I haven’t met all of you, or had many face to face conversations, but please know that you can email me and communicate with me, and we will set up appointments as needed. I look forward to getting to know you all more this year.

Reminders and Other Information:

  • Health Checks – I have been asking each morning if your child has completed their health check – if you are not sure what this, please shoot me an email. Also, please make sure that your child knows that you are doing this so that they can answer when I ask them if they have done their health check – thanks!
  • FreshGrade – one of the ways I like to share what we are doing in the classroom each week is with pictures, and the way that I share them is through Freshgrade. I have sent out an email request for Freshgrade, which you can accept and then receive emails when I have posted pictures or anything else for your child in particular. Please check it out, and feel free to comment on the pictures when I post them. This can also be a great way to see what we are doing in class (especially in a year where it is more difficult to be involved), allowing you to then talk with your child about it! Let me know if you didn’t get the email request or it doesn’t seem to be working. Also let me know if there is another email address that you woud like added as well. Thanks!
  • If you have not yet brought in Kleenex boxes, paint shirt and gym shoes, please do so as soon as possible
  • Water bottles – I would encourage each student to have a water bottle … we don’t have a water fountain in the classroom, so it is important that they have a way to have a drink when hot and thirsty
  • Tell Me About Your Child information sheets went home this week, and I would appreciate if you would fill it out and send it back to class with your child. It is helpful for me to have some information to get the year started off right, and to know what you want me to know about your child.

I’m sure there are some things that I am missing, but I will keep you posted as they come to mind 🙂
