We have been singing a new song called, ‘Way Maker’ … “way maker, miracle worker, promise keeper, light in the darkness” – it was such a beautiful reminder to hear the children belting out these lyrics, with such a presence of the spirit as they sang. We also had a very high energy fall colour day. A huge thank you to all the parents that signed up and came for parent-teacher interviews. It was great to sit down and meet with you all. If you did not make it, please send me an email and we can set up a time to meet next week. It is important that I connect with each of you.

Sight Word Practice

Good afternoon,

I am sending home (with most students) a sight word practice sheet. On it are some of the sight words that your child does not know. I would like you to practice these at home with your child, and then sign and return it so I can test them on these words. I will send them home with a new list of words, once they have mastered the first list. These are not words they need to be able to spell independently, they are words they need to be able to read independently. Please don’t just practice from the paper I send home, I want them to be able to recognize and read them, not just have them memorized on a piece of paper. If you have any questions about it, let me know.

This is a key year for reading, and we are working on it very hard at school, but support from home makes a huge difference. I will be checking in weekly with your child about this, please take the time to do it. It doesn’t have to be a long, laborious process every day, just a few minutes here and there.

If your child does not come home with a list, then they have mastered all of the sight words we have done up until this point.

Weekly Update

Short week, but still very full. We had an earthquake drill. All of the students did an excellent job, and practiced like it was real, which is what we talk about doing because we know it is important that we know what to do. We have also been spending some time visualizing and creating pictures in our head of what we are reading, working on our sight words and reading, and talking about physical and chemical processes.

Friday Update

It has been a good week in Grade 2. We have been working hard to understand place value in Math, learning about Rights, Rules, and Responsibilities in Socials, and today we read a story that was called ‘My Mouth is a Volcano’, which talks about interrupting others and how that makes them feel. I also have to apologize this week for any confusion that I have caused in our Spelling List. It was brought to my attention this morning that on the blog I had written the word ‘along’ … when in fact the word was ‘alone’, and that is what we had been practicing in class. So if your child was arguing with you about what the word was, or how to spell it, I apologize. That was my typing error! I hope you all have a wonderful long weekend, that you enjoy some time with your families as you celebrate Thanksgiving (I have the special treat of a sleepover with my nephew 🙂 who is 5, this weekend … as my brother lives out of town but are here for Thanksgiving).

Dates to Remember:

Monday, October 14th – Thanksgiving, no school

Thursday, October 17th – Earthquake Drill

Spelling:

No spelling this week due to the short week.

Bible Memory:

Matthew 6:9-13 – “Our Father in heaven, hallowed by your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.”

Reminders and Other Information:

  • skating permission slips went home today
  • I also want to encourage you to be reading at home with your child EVERY single night … Grade 2 is a huge year for reading, so please support your child in this way.

Reminder and Other Information:

  • FreshGrade – this is a program that I use to send pictures and share what your child is learning and doing each day at school. I post pictures on a semi-regular basis. It can be pictures of playtime, field trips, work that they have been doing … I think it is always great for parents to know what is going on in the classroom as much as possible. It also allows you to comment on the pictures that are shared.  All this being said, I have realized that not everyone received the invitation to join, which means you haven’t been seeing the pictures, and you are missing out 😉 If you have not been getting the emails, can you send me an email so that I can re-invite you and we can figure this out. Thanks!

Field Trip Reminder

Just a reminder that tomorrow we have our field trip to the Apple Barn. They may wear play clothes. Please make sure they come dressed appropriately for the weather, we will be outside rain or shine! And also send a lunch that can be easily eaten outside. 🙂 Looking forward to it!
