Weekly Update

Highlights from our Week:

This week has been lots of Remembrance Day activities … from the assembly and all of the extra time that went into practicing for that to talking about veterans and peace and why we honour this day each year. We created a collaborative poster as a class. And they did such a great job in the assembly this afternoon!

Math: This week we started our introduction to multiplication. They are all really excited about this. We don’t dive right into multiplication in and of itself, but we are looking at repeated addition as the basis of it. I want students to not just memorize facts, but to understand why they are doing what they are doing. So while some of them are eager to jump ahead, we are creating a foundation on which to build this entire concept.

Gym: Gym was also very exciting for some of them this week as we are going to be playing soccer for the month of November. With some reminders that not everyone loves soccer or is as intense as the next person, I think it will be enjoyed by all. We have worked on some passing drills, and played a game called Monkey in the Middle.  We also enjoyed playing a little 4-corner soccer.

Dates to Remember:

Monday, November 11th – Remembrance Day, no school

Wednesday, November 13th – Space Day (see details below)

Thursday, November 28th – Skating field trip

Friday, November 29th – End of Term 1, 11:30am dismissal

Spelling:

No spelling list this week.

Bible Memory:

This is for the months of November and December.

Luke 2:3-14

And everyone went to their own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared  with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favour rests.”

Reminders and Other Information:

Space Day: Get ready for an exciting adventure as we have Space Dress-Up Day! Students are encouraged to dress up as astronauts, planets, rocket ships, and other space-themed characters to explore the wonders of the universe together. Whether you’re rocking a space suit, transforming into your favourite planet, or designing a colourful rocket ship costume, creativity will be in full orbit!

  • Remember to be reading at home every day, and return your home reading after you have read the book 5 times!

Highlights from our week:

It has been so good so far to meet and connect with parents today. I am sending this in the middle of the day, but look forward to connecting with the rest of you this afternoon!

Social Studies: The students worked hard this week to make a map of their bedroom. They had to make sure they included all the important elements of a map.

Science: Ecosystems has been our focus in Science and we learned about the three different levels. The students then had to create a poster about the ecosystem of their choice. They had to give a definition of the level of ecosystem, as well as a minimum of three examples of that ecosystem. The posters have turned out so well, and they worked so hard on them!

This week we have had some extra time in Music so that they could practice with the Grade 2/3 class for the Remembrance Day Assembly next week.

Weekly Update

Highlights from our Week:

Math: Whodunnit?? This week the students had to use their subtraction skills to solve the mystery. Each time they correctly answered a question, they had a clue to help them narrow down the suspects, and solve who, where and how!

Social Studies: We have been working on mapping skills – reading a map, important elements on a map, etc. and this week we practiced drawing a map. We collectively as a group created a map of our classroom, and then they independently drew a map of their bedroom.

Language Arts: We are working on lots of different things in Language Arts, but one thing we have focused on this week, is adding interesting details to our writing. We have been talking about ‘linking words’ and how they help us to create a variety of sentence structures, as well as adding detail versus just adding more. It is great to see them work hard at this!

Psalm 23:1-6

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

**As rainy season approaches, it’s important to get your kids ready for outdoor recess, even when it’s wet! Students will go outside to play, so make sure they have rain gear like waterproof jackets, good boots, and umbrellas. This will help keep them dry and happy while they enjoy their time outside.

Weekly Update

Highlights from our Week:

Bible: we wrapped up our unit on the Fruit of the Spirit. Ask your child if they can tell you all the Fruit of the Spirit.

Science: We are learning about Biodiversity. This week we learned about the three levels of ecosystems – biomes, meso ecosystem and micro-ecosystem. They have been learning all kinds of new words as we begin this unit in Science.

Gym: Volleyball is our unit for the month of October. We have spent time learning how to bump and set the ball, as well as some of the rules of the game. We use beach balls to play ‘games’ as we are learning, which has been lots of fun.

We ended off our week today with some pumpkin fun! Students did a pumpkin investigation – some of them were less thrilled than others about getting their hands covered in pumpkin goop! But lots of fun was had 🙂

Weekly Update

Highlights from our Week:

The Apple Barn was definitely a highlight of our week. The students had all been looking forward to it with lots of excitement, and I am so glad that the sun was shining and we were able to have so much fun! Thanks to all the parent’s that joined us for our field trip!

Be sure to check out the pictures I post on Seesaw sometime tomorrow from our time at the Apple Barn!

We also spent some time this week talking about Thanksgiving! We did a couple of different fun activities with turkeys … one day they had to disguise a turkey (these were pretty cute!) and then another day we did a writing assignment – If I was a turkey on Thanksgiving … where would you hide? How would you get away? The students were able to be creative and it was fun to read through the different ways the considered escaping. Thankfulness and gratitude was also something we spent time on. They completed ABC’s of thankfulness. We have so many things to be thankful for in our lives, and we have spent time in prayer thanking God for the things he has blessed us with, as well

That being said, I hope that you all have a wonderful long weekend spent with family, friends, and good food remembering all that we have to be thankful for.

Highlights from our Week:

Math:  This week we escaped from the Amazon Rainforest. They worked as a team to complete each of the challenges. They love doing these escape rooms and were so excited about it.

Language Arts: This week we wrote about our Favourite season. We also started talking about what it means to visualize, and how painting a picture in our head helps us to engage and understand a story or something we are reading, better.

Science: This week we started talking about Biodiversity. Ask the students if they can tell you what this big word means! (Biodiversity is the variety of different living things in an ecosystem).

We had a Lockdown drill this week. While this is always a bit of a scarier drill to practice, it was good to see that they know what to do and that we can follow through in case of an emergency.

Weekly Update

Highlights from our week! Hope you have a wonderful long weekend.

Language Arts: We have been talking about making connections while we are reading. This is a reading strategy that helps us to engage and think more deeply as we find ideas or thinks we can relate to while we are reading.

Math: The students were asked to Run a Candy Store this week … they had to complete place value tasks to get it up and running, and then to sell products.

Socials: This week we did both our Terry Fox Run and had Orange Shirt Day!

I was so proud of all of them as they did a walk/run for 30 minutes around the school. As a class we did 154 laps (almost 75km). Each lap was just under 500m!

For Orange Shirt Day we read a story called “Phyllis’s Orange Shirt” and had a discussion around how she must have felt. We talked about how Every Child Matters – God created each and every one of us special and unique, and we all have a place and a purpose here.

We also had an Earthquake Drill this week. It is always good to practice and make sure we know what to do! The students did a great job listening and responding appropriately.

Spelling:

No spelling list this week due to the short week.

Bible Memory:

We are going to be starting up our Bible Memory program. As a primary department, we are focusing on the same scriptures each year but building on to it also. So while some of this is review, we are making the passage longer each year.

Friday Update

It has been a wonderful week in Grade 3. Here are some highlights from our week:

Science: We have been talking about what science is, as well as what scientists do. We talked about the many types of scientists in the different branches of science. Ask them what area of science they think is the most interesting to study and learn about!

Bible: We are going through the Fruit of the Spirit. They have enjoyed the Fruit of the Spirit song that we listen to to help us learn the fruits!

Math: We are reviewing/learning about Place Value. This week the students were ‘Lost in the Desert’ and they had to work in teams to escape to safety. This required them to overcome different obstacles and complete different challenges. They were all VERY excited about this and didn’t want to stop and wait until the next day when we ran out of time. They are already asking me when we can do another one.

This week we also had our first Fire Drill. The students were in Music when it occurred, but they did a great job with following protocol for a drill!
