Hoopsters and Diggers FYI

As our Little Digger and Little Hoopster after school programs continue, we have noticed that many siblings of students involved are also staying at school while waiting for parents to pick them up. We understand that parents often do not want to make multiple trips to the school. However, parents should be aware that after 3:25 there is no supervision available outside on the playground and in any of the other areas of the school. If an accident happens or an incident occurs, staff members may not be available to help. For student safety, we would encourage parents to tell siblings to stay inside the gym along the walls and wait there or in the front foyer until parents arrive. Alternatively, carpooling may be available so siblings do not have to wait at the school. Thank you for your consideration.

Friday Update

It’s been a great first week back. I always love seeing the kids after a break, and they are so excited to share about what they did on the time off. This week we have jumped right back into things … continuing our Read Across Canada unit with a visit to Alberta, learning about 3D shapes in Math, and breaking down the water cycle to learn about each of its parts – this week precipitation and evaporation. Great to have everyone back and to see them ready to settle in to the last stretch for this year.

A few highlights for all were: Math Mayhem, playing math games and winning prizes; having a mini party with our Grade 6 buddies, playing games and dancing with them; reading stories about real life events and people from British Columbia for our Reading Across Canada Socials unit; and learning about 2D Shapes, being creative to use as many as they could in a creative picture. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend, have some time to rest as we gear up for the last week before Spring Break!

If students come to school already dressed in their swimsuit, please make sure the necessary clothes are packed to change into after swimming.

Pancake Lunch

On Thursday, March 17th, students do not need to bring a lunch. I will be making green pancakes for the students to enjoy as it is St. Patrick’s Day. If your student does not want to participate they can just bring a lunch that day.

Donut Fundraiser

The Elementary department is doing $2 donut fundraiser for the school in Guatemala. On Friday, March 18, students can bring $2 to their teacher and at lunch they will receive a glazed donut from Safeway bakery. We have ordered enough for each student to have one donut if they wish.

Friday Update

We have had a solid week in Grade 2. And it is hard to believe that we have just two more weeks until Spring Break, although we are starting to feel ready for it. This week we spent much of our math classes working on a mystery puzzle. Students had to solve different clues, figuring out which suspect was guilty. They loved working on this, and did so well completing each clue with their partner. We have also started a Social Studies unit about Canada. We will be ‘reading across the country’ learning facts and interesting stories/history of each province and territory. And finally, we had an assembly this week on Safe and Unsafe Substances. It is important to review this, and students accurately recalled much of what they have learned in the past.

I’m sure most of you heard that on Thursday i had no voice, which led to me being away on Friday. On Thursday, when I had no voice the students were all so sweet, and they were very good listeners and adapted to switching things up a little. Although, they did think I was trying to play a joke on them at the beginning of the day.  I’m sure they are enjoying their day with Mrs. Milec.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Friday Update

A sunny, albeit cold and blustery week! It was wonderful to see the sun shining, but I was happy to see the children come dressed appropriately to be outside, especially on Tuesday and Wednesday. Wednesday was also Pink Shirt day. We talked about what it means to be a good friend, and what to do when we see others being unkind. I was away today (Friday) and Mrs. Milec spent the day with the Grade 2’s.

This week we did a math activity that required students to know their phone number. This was something many of the students didn’t know, so I would encourage you to work with your children to make sure they know their phone number, as well as their home address. These are important things for them to know in case they ever have an emergency. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
